to help build a sustainable future. As part of that commitment we’d like to introduce Rebecca Bautista, our Greener Choice Coordinator. As a new addition to our team, Rebecca will be assisting the business in greening the retail product line, and implementing greener business practices.

Partnering with…
Build it Green and Plan-It Hardware, Friedman’s is offering customers Greener Choice products. These products have been verified by a third-party to be the most beneficial to people, environment, and wildlife during its lifecycle. Our Greener Choice products are produced and traded in a socially responsible manner, are higher quality products, and function to expectations.

Accountability…
In addition to providing Greener Choice products, we are taking steps to reduce our waste, and conserve natural resources. We have been recycling for over 15 years, in 2007 we diverted 792,000 tons of waste from our landfills and are committed to doing more. This year we will continue our expand our Greener Choice product line, educating our team members on what it means to be green, and benchmarking and tracking our success in greening our business practices, and retail products.

Accomplishments in 2007…
We diverted 264,263 Tons of waste from our landfills through our scrap wood, metal, and plastic recycling program. In addition to that, we were also able in sell back some of our scrap material for an earnings of $8,786. When you consider our bottom line, Friedman’s would have had to do $439,300 in sales to yield the amount of earnings we generated by recycling our scrap material.

Targets for 2008…
Part of our audit with PG&E included an evaluation of our rate system. Simply changing this will save us an estimated $7,750 annually. In addition, part of their recommendation was to change our florescent tub e lighting to low wattage T-8 lamps, which we are in the process of installing. Installing T-8 lamps will yield an average savings of $700 per month or $8,400 annually. 2008 Annual Savings Projected: $16,150.
