As you plan your summer landscaping projects, there are a few things to keep in mind. Strategically planning your gardens and lawns will help conserve water and save you money in utility bills. Knowing the best plants and products for the Northern California climate will guarantee your landscaping project success.
Select climate-appropriate species. Plants that are native to the area you live are much more likely to thrive and require less water. Grouping plants together by water requirements allows you to water appropriately without over- or under-watering dissimilar plants.
Choose plants within the correct Hardiness Zone. The region of our stores (Santa Rosa, Sonoma, Ukiah) will fall within Zones 9-10.
Place mulch around trees and plants to reduce evaporation and help control pesky water-stealing weeds. This will not only conserve some water, but also time – think of all the weeding you won’t have to do in the hot summer sun!
Fertilize smart – the best thing to do in drought conditions is find a fertilizer that will keep plants healthy without making them grow faster. Most organic and slow release fertilizers will do the trick. For example, using organic or iron fertilizers on your lawn instead of a high-nitrogen fertilizer will allow for less growth, less mowing, and less water while still maintaining a healthy, green yard.
Water wisely with products designed to be more efficient than just your hose. Water trees, shrubs, and plants with deep roots with root irrigators. Deep Drip watering stakes deliver the water directly to the roots where it’s needed instead of flooding the area on the surface. Mix Soil Moist granules into soil to help reduce the amount of water needed to maintain healthy plants. The crystals will absorb water and release it slowly, acting as a reservoir even in drought conditions.
All of the products mentioned can be found at all of the Friedman’s locations. Soil Moist is found with the houseplant fertilizers and the Deep Drip root irrigators are out in the nursery. Bring your landscaping ideas to us in Santa Rosa, Sonoma or Ukiah and together we can help you select the perfect products you need to turn your yard and garden the sanctuary you dream of.
