Did you know one person is killed in a house fire every 3 hours according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)? Or that California happens to be ranked second for the highest amount of fire deaths in the nation?
Fire is a real threat to our community. Your household has a 1 in 4 chance of experiencing a reported home fire. At Friedman’s we want to ensure our customers have access to resources to help prepare themselves for a home fire. We continue to partner with Kidde to provide you with high quality fire safety products, like fire extinguishers and smoke detectors.
How to Choose a Fire Extinguisher
Fire extinguishers have ratings; A and B:C
- The A rating is a water equivalency rating. Each A is equivalent to 1 ¼ gallons of water ie. 4A = 5 gallons of water.
- The B:C rating is equivalent to the amount of square footage the extinguisher can cover, handled by a professional. 20 B:C = 20 square feet of coverage.
- C indicates the extinguisher is suitable for use on electrically charged equipment.
Choose an extinguisher that will address the most probable fires types in that area. Kidde recommends the following for key areas of your home.
Kitchen – The kitchen is the likeliest place you will have a fire. Kidde’s 711A extinguisher is best for the kitchen area.
Living Area – Fire extinguishers 2-A: 10-B:C rated are recommended for the main living areas of your home. There should be a unit on every level of your home, and they should be no more than 40 feet apart.
Garage/Workshop – Due to volumes of flammable liquids stored in the common household garage, Kidde suggests a higher rated unit such as the 3-A:40B-C Garage/Workshop Fire Extinguisher.
