Spring is here! Take advantage of the warmer temperatures and get a head start on an annual spring maintenance routine for your home’s exterior. This checklist can help you target the areas that need maintenance so you can get your chores done quickly, leaving you time to go outside and enjoy the weather.

Clean out your gutters. Check for foliage build-up, particularly if there are trees that hover over the roof. Consider installing gutter guards. While you’re at it, make sure the downspout is free of debris and pointing at least 2 feet away from foundation walls.Get a professional cleaning if you live in a two-story house.

Trim overgrown trees and hedges away from your home. Branches should be at least 7 feet away from the exterior of your house to prolong the life of your siding and roof. Cut down broken branches and get rid of out-of-control vines, as they can crack the siding and allow moisture and pests into your home.

Get your lawn mower ready for the season with special maintenance.A dull lawn mower blade tears grass, leaving it vulnerable to disease, sun damage, and insects. A blade typically needs sharpening once or twice a year, or more often depending on how big your yard is, how frequently you mow, and the type of grass you have. It’s recommended toalso tune up your lawn mower every 3 months or after every 25 hours of use to increase its efficiency and reduce polluting emissions.

Lawn maintenance can help prevent weeds from taking over. A pre-emergent herbicide, such as Roundup 50% Concentrate Grass & Weed Killer, works best. You should apply the weed block in early spring when the ground temperature is consistently above 60 degrees. Rake the lawn first to remove any branches, debris, and leaves. Spray the weed killer evenly across the lawn, and make sure you don’t miss any spots that will give weeds an invitation.
