Earth Day April 22nd: Plant a Tree!

As communities grow, it is becoming more common to strip areas of trees to build homes, stores, and businesses. The loss of trees significantly affects the environment and the visual appeal of the world around us. Even a single tree can make a difference. This Earth Day, on April 22nd, consider planting a tree in your yard to help the planet.

Trees are a vital part of our ecosystem. They absorb and cleanse the air of excess carbon dioxide, like that from car exhaust. They can also filter out other pollutant gases such as sulfur dioxide, ammonia, ozone, and nitrogen oxide. Acting as a natural air filter and adding beauty to your yard, you can help restore just a little bit of nature.

Planting a tree is best done in the dormant season, late fall or early spring before the buds appear. Once you’ve chosen your tree and selected a place in the yard, ensure no utility lines are running where you intend to dig. Start by digging a broad, shallow planting hole. Preparing a hole wider than the tree base will allow the roots to break through the soil easier and brace it into place. Be sure not to dig the hole too deep or the roots will not get the oxygen they need. The truck flare (where the trunk expands at the base) should be slightly above grade.

Remove any wires, packaging or containers the tree may be in, as well as the root ball. Make sure the tree is straight before you backfill; even new trees can be hard to reposition once in place. Gently yet firmly replace the soil around the tree. Firmly packing the soil will release any damaging air bubbles but since the roots are tender it is still necessary to use a gentle hand.

Stake the tree for stability if necessary, and add mulch to control conditions and protect your new tree. Be sure to water, trim, and fertilize your new addition as recommended – different trees and weather conditions will call for varying care.
